My Carmel Subrun project. Another far fetched warped mind build.
Blame it on Greg! (Mr Pita)
He sent me a link to a HK item that he thought would make a fun little sub.
As soon as I saw it my brain kicked into strange design mode.
So I ordered two (one for Greg) as thanks.
I love to show you can make almost anything into a sub.
Hence my creations like the Tadpole.
This one is based on a Airel Device sold by HK to drop out of model airplanes.
It's filled with flour and will break open hitting the ground.
The trick has been getting everything to fit inside.
Not much space to work with.
But I have gotten fairly good at fitting 10 LBS of ship in a 5 LB bag.
I am really close to testing the device.
It should weigh about 6oz is about 9" long, and is powered by one of the kickass RS380 motors.
As my cousin likes to say. "Do the math"
No idea how it will run but it will be fun.
That is till I probably collide with the Carmel pool.
I am sure the 8 balls will be taking odds on how long this will take.
Who knows, it may end up becoming a novelty drink mixer. Lol

Worked on the thrust directors today. I will use an X tail configuration.

On another explosive topic, why not run it in a standard rudder/dive plane setup? There is no real up on this unless you are using the way it sets on the bench as what is up. I guess it really doesn't matter on this does it?
Dave what a fun subject this is. If you added a small compressed air cylinder you could make it blow water out the top like it was a exploding. What ever you do, it will be fun to see it run.

I went with the X tail as I think it is more maneuverable.
And it looks cool.
And it has to look cool! Lol BD

Here is an older photo I took showing the RC system.
Mabuchi RS380, Novak Spy ESC, Multiplex Micro RX, two micro servos.
Going to run a two cell Turnigy 850 ma battery.
All that will fit sadly. BD

I ended up making a Z cut in the hull, or casing, or whatever you call it.
It ended up making it much easier to open the device up to change the battery.
But as I was telling the Mr Pita and Speedy today I totally underestimated the time and work required to construct the sub.
It may be small but the same procedure is required to design and build it as a larger model.
In some ways is is harder as you dont have any extra room to fall back on.
But I still think I can have it done in time.

Well it is done.
I ran into a problem I had not anticipated. The model is to heavy.
I really thought it would need keel weight to get the trim correct.
But I blew this one.
So as the saying goes when life gives you lemons you make lemonade.
So I took my lemon and added two floatation stabilizers.
They are removeable and able to move out (or in) further by using different lengths of mount tubing.
And being clear should not be that noticeable in the water.
I think in the total sceam of things having them is better as it will stop a lot of the torque roll.
And having tested the power in the laundry tub I can attest to its thrust potential.
IF I don't hit anything it is going to haul asp!
They look kind of like booster rockets.
No testing before Carmel as I don't want to damage DonO's pool liner.
So we shall see. BD
