    Colombian Navy fights drugs
Colombia's small submarine service is playing a critical role in the US-led war on drugs, senior officers told the SubCon 2003 conference in Kiel, Germany, which was organized by the German Submarine Consortium in September 2003. Armed with 29 years of experience, two German-built Type 209 diesel- electric boats (ARC Pijao and Tayrona) and two Italian-built midget submarines (ARC Intrepido and Indomable), Colombian submariners are responsible for a "large percentage" of drugs seized by the Colombian Navy, the officers claimed.

UK looks at safeguards for sub supply chain
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is looking at measures to safeguard and sustain critical elements of the UK's submarine industrial base in advance of firm commitments to place orders for further Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs).

      Hi Antione,

      Here is an article

      Hi Antione,

Here is an article on the new proposed French SSN Barracuda to replace the Rubis SSN's. You will need 'PDF Acrobat' to open the article addressed above. The new design's general size reflects an acknowledgement that the neat looking small Rubis SSN's (the smallest nuclear attack submarines in the world - the American NR-1 is smaller but does not carry weapons) if handy are really rather too small for a broad range of missions and weapons loads. These vessels are to be deployed more like the American and British SSN's armed with cruise missiles for attacking in shore targets working along with surface battle groups, and the 3D communications this requires in real time. The French are known to be rapidly developing a French 'TLAM' also.

The Barracuda illustration reminds me a bit of the Astute class, but with more French lines and contours (naturally). In the illustration does the Barracuda uses a one piece all moving horizontal stern plane?

Thank you Antoine for thinking of me refering me to the Scorpene SSK. Scorpene is essentually a conventional/AIP propelled version of the Rubis class for export as I understand.

      Regards,

      Steve
