the mystery pylon mounts, truth is pretty boring.
since the dsrv program was a cover story and a way to hide money they would mount a real one on the seawolf once in a while. The problem was the dsrv mounts were designed to be mated to a round hull boat so the pylons were just a set of adapters.
Was its simply for show? Did the DSRV ever undock and redock from Seawolf?? I can't imagine trying to redock a DSRV and try to line up all four of the pylons for capture…..

I am supposed to get the book mentioned above today. Ordered it Monday evening, so it was fast!

I was not on board yet when they did the dsrv operations. I do know the cradle stayed on the boat. it was bolted to the pylons and the round hull on the dsrv sat in the cradle. they also had to do work to the seawolfs rear escape trunk, it was raised several inches. with all the extra paint the boat got the nick name uss sea skunk..

im pretty sure they did a launch and retrieval of the dsrv. I don't know much about the dsrv project. they were attached to us ( submarine development grope one )but they stayed in san Diego and we stayed mostly at mare island. I did see one in person at san Diego on a quick run down there but that's about it, there were rumors about them being used in covert ops but I have no idea if it true or not. I know they realy didn't do any thing with us except make a showing on were all the money was going.

seawolf aft escape trunk after they cut her up .... sniff sniff

you can see the difference between the real dsrv and the fake one..

I always thought the fake dsrv looked a lot like sealab one, since the special projects roots were from the sealab experiments I wouldn't be suprissed if they had a lot in common, I haven't been in either of them

Thanks! This has been really great stuff to hear from someone who was there. I appreciate that there are certain areas you can't go into, but have really enjoyed what you have passed along.

yep their pages like to show off their finds.

If you search hard and want to spend time translating you can get the Russian version of how the pod was found,

Their version was a flounder fishing trawler snagged it and dragged it up. They though it was an explosive device because it kept getting hotter ( no sea water cooling). It was taken to an abandoned airport and they were getting ready to blow it up when KGB showed up and snatched it.

They called it a cocoon instead of a pod

Regarding Seawolf, I have been wondering where the saturation chamber was. Clearly not in the aft room. But if in the extended section, how does that all work?

The above photo of the "DSRV Simulator" (Saturation diving chamber) looks as if it is mounted on Parche. I understand that the chamber was removed from Halibut and transferred on to the rear deck of Parche. It was there until the overhaul in which Parche's bow was extended in length, where presumably a new, improved internal saturation chamber was located.

                      Pre conversion overhaul with chamber

                      Post conversion

PS- I got my copy of "Watertight- How I survived the submarine service without losing my mind". Only about 30 pages in, but excellent so far! Highly recommend it.

It's easier to just learn enough Russian to get by. Every so often you'll hit a word that has an english "definition" but no one corresponding word and google translate has problems with them. I did my last year as an undergrad doing work on film theory, so I had to research theories and people like Sergei Eisenstein and Leni Riefenstahl. I will die happy if I NEVER see 'Battleship Potemkin' again.

Interesting side note, had I covered them in the 50's, I'd be called in for a McCarthy hearing.

Just saw a USS Seawolf model kit from a Rice Krispies offer from 1963 offered on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-1963-Ke...wAAOSw4shYATxP . Hull and sail depict the Seawolf plan. Wonder how they got it right back in 1963 but Aurora didn't . ebay offer has 1 bid so far for $99.00. FYI.

                                badcooky,

Sorry for late reply Thanks for the ssn 575 link. I have been collecting a bunch of Seawolf ssn 575 Pics and I'm still planning to try to make a pre-Special Proj ssn575 from the old Aurora Nautilus kit. What I really need are Deck and Stern overhead views.
