    If you are going to

If you are going to glue plastic to plastic there is nothing better than plastic model cement. But plastic to another material the CA or the Express will work fine. BD.

But you need to make sure it's the right adhesive for the type of plastic you are using!

          Bigdave,
It is my understanding the Robbe U47 is made from ABS material so practicing construction of a plastic model using Stablite Express should be close. Correct me if I am mistaken please.

Plastics can be real......picky...when it comes to using solvent adhesives. You need the right one or it's not going to work well (or at all).

CA works on just about anything since it's forming a mechanical bond with the parts in questions.

Many folks have successfully used Stablite Express to build the U-47 kit and I don't think I've heard of any glue joint failures over the long-term....

p.s. BD - I too assumed he was referring to styrene....just wanted to make sure that the answer wasn't likely to be taken out of context.

Jeff, BD, yes styrene. I'm old. Models use to be referred to as simply "plastic" and I have never changed my manner of speech. It takes time for us geezers to change our ways. I use to walk to school in the snow and fought bears along the way.............. My kids didn't believe that crap either.

                Gene,
I think using the express on a plastic model would be a waste of express. I would practice on some scrap pieces of the kit ABS plastic. Get yourself some good ABS cement for the plastic to plastic. Try a bit of both and see what you think works the best. The ABS cement will actually give you a weld. The two parts are melted together. Just my 2.2224578129 cents!!

Thanks Kazzer, I had run across this while I was researching but had lost it. I'm glad you pointed it out to me again. Thanks.

I have the Robbe U47 on order but at the same time I am thinking about purchasing the complete Revelle Gato Kit with the D&E Sub-Driver and DVD. I have ordered the Polk Tracker III with both 8 and 6 channel receiver, with I suspect the latter working with the Gato Kit. What do you think?

                          ? Change of plan...

                          Dear Gene/Nooney, and others,

At present I'm building a 16mm coach for a garden railway, followed, I hope, by a Stuart-Turner steam Beam Engine rebuild. I've just ordered some bits n' bobs for SY 'Yarta', so the sub thing will have to wait. However, it must be said that of ALL the forementioned projects it's the Sub that's really got me interested the most. This has been helped by my buying a copy of 'Simply Model Submarines' - this is a good book, although the pics are only in B&W.

However, as some as you know, I've been having a few moral dilemmas about buying a WW1 or WW2 German sub - much as though I admire their technical expertise, they were after all, responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of people (many civilians), and almost brought GB to its knees. By building one I did not wish to 'deify' German subs. (and yes, we have a VW Golf and a BMW in the drive).

So, I am now looking at Sheerline's 'Trafalgar' class British subs. - a little old in some ways , but are undergoing a refit with new reactor cores and the most advanced sonar in the world (borrowed from the 'Astute' Class - how I wish there was a kit for that monster!).

I would welcome anyone with info on building that sub. It's a little more expensive that the Engel's 'Fafayette' but the kit is more complete. The only issue I MAY have with it is that it MAY be a little TOO EASY to build ("in 3 days") whereas I'm a little envious of the people with the stories of weeks & months of glueing, sanding and bodging! I read from a Google search that there is an easy fix to decrease the radius of the turning-circle.

                          Any comments would be welcome.

You could also take a look at the Small World Models 1/96th scale Trenchant/Trafalgar kit. It's the closest thing that the r/c sub hobby has to an ARF. Drop in the r/c gear and battery, file a few holes in the bottom (ballast vents), paint and go!

I also have one of the OTW 1/72nd scale Trafalgar hulls. Very nicely done hull kit.
