I have used brake fluid

I have used brake fluid in the past and it removed Floquil Railroad paints very easy,don`t know what DOT number it was though.If you use the MEK be very careful,as it is deadly and will flash very easy.I know from expirence as I hauled it in bulk when I drove a chemical transport tanker.Be sure to wear a good respirator with the right filters installed.

That's exactly right, TD. And based on what I've heard now I would advise not using it at all. It is overkill for floquil and has to be used sparingly on GRP anyway.

Steve, try the lacquer thinner. It is a hotter solvent than the stuff in the brake fluid. This is what I used to remove the Krylon type spray paint from my LA hull.

All the flammability and health safety precautions still apply.

This experience would seem to be a perfect set-up for Myth-busters.
None of the products mentioned; brake fluid, lacquer thinner, or xylene did much of anything to the paint; for hours of experimenting I have about 4 square inches of exposed hull.

I have special ordered something called Jasco, which is supposed to be 'The Product' for taking paint off this hull, I'll keep you posted with a follow-up when it arrives and I try it out.

Scuff the paint up a

Scuff the paint up a little, find an old bowl that you or your missus isn't too precious about.

Pour in the brake fluid, and dip the hull into it.

Leave for a few hours, and see if it makes any difference.

It should work, but it takes time for the stuff to act on the paint.

I've left multiple coats of the brake fluid on for more than 20hrs...and have itty-bitty little open spots to show for that effort. But...the brake fluid does make it shiny!
The lacquer thinner makes the paint dull up and then evaporates before your very eyes with out doing anything.

I did in fact, 'scuff up' the paint surface with #2 steel wool, figuring it would 'bite' better...no luck.

I always get the 'black marble'!

Wait until the Jasco come in...then...

Paint REMOVER

The aerosol cans of the JASCO paint and epoxy remover came from the delivery guy and I finally got the chance to test it last week.

The directions are six bullet points...the health warning is 4 paragraphs long.
To apply this stuff you have to dress up as if you are dealing with a HazMat spill.

I sprayed it on and in 6 seconds the paint was crinkling and bubbling...No Kidding!
I wiped it off with a paper towel and a second application took off the primer. I got more done in 2 minutes than in all of the previous tries combined.

Safety equipment is a must for this stuff as well as having a serious exhaust system.

Is Methylene Chloride and Toluene supposed to taste like chicken?

IT works as advertised!!! Maybe even better.

BTW-I was only kidding about the 'tastes like chicken' bit; this product is serious stuff and should be treated as such.
