    Your recommended SCR guide?

    Hi all

Back last year mainly out of boredom and in need of a hobby, I started from scratch to build of a model submarine. After searching around on the net for photos I finally decided to build a Russian Typhoon class sub, mainly because of its uniform shape. At the time I assumed it would make it easier to build when compared to WW2 subs and the modern nuclear attack subs.

After 18 months of trying different methods and materials I have produced a semi-complete Hull. It’s not entirely uniform as I original assumed would be easy to replicate, and has a number of “dimples” that I’m currently filling in.

This is where I need your help.

What SCR articles would you recommend that would help me from my current point in building (or from start) to a finished product, covering all the essential stages? i.e. Hull finishing, WTC and maybe come bells and whistles.

Are there any others points that you would like to add that the article(s) don’t fully cover?

    Thank you for your help.

      With reference to the first

With reference to the first link mentioned. Yes I have seen it and I think what this gentleman has made is a work of art.

My intention 18 months ago was to recreate his work step by step but at half his scale. Unfortunately at the time I was unable to obtain the polystyrene sheets.

So I substituted with some MDF cross section cuttings. At each point where the sub changed shape I had an MDF section.

To save wood the long missile section had five MDF cuttings connected together with four long dowels in each corner.

This was the start of many mistakes!

The missile section wasn’t as structural sound as I hoped and the frame twisted out of shape when filler was used. Being naive I carried on thinking I could compensate for this when applying the resin

      Yet another mistake!

The resin was a nightmare to use! The link mentioned about the resin mat producing a smooth finish. The product I used produced anything but a smooth final. The mat I purchased was like a mess of small fibres lightly intermingled. When coming into contact with the resin they quickly clumped and produced air bubbles and large bumps. This added to my all ready disfigured submarine.

I’m now at the point of sanding down the bumps, applying more resin where needed.

Even with the step by step guidance problems have occurred, however it has been an enjoyable interesting experience.

I am hoping that someone would point me in the right direction on how to complete the next stages of the build filling the gaps (dos and don’t) that are not covered on this website.

I have had a look at the second link. I would appreciate your opinion that would be a very good article(s) for a beginner.

        I’m at work right now

I’m at work right now and here lately my internet connection is so so. I’m writing this in word and hopefully I can paste it on the forum the next time I can get on. Here are some places to start.

SCR list; (just a quick search) Sept 06, March 07, June 07, Sept 07. There are some good articles on recent scratch builds by some of our members.

Here on the forum you will find the following.
This is Kevin McCleods 1/96 Oscar build. A very nice boat.

Next is a type VII from Mylo, also a very nice project.

        Here is a Russian Sierra.

        And my personal favorite.
        Pirates 1/96 ohio, here.

Each one of these articles or threads do an excellent job of walking you through pretty much the entire process of a scratch build. That’s not to say that theirs is the only way because as we all know there is more than one way to skin a cat. You can also PM the person doing the build and ask more pointed questions of them. I’ve dealt with them in some form or fashion and they all seem to be eager to help those that ask. This is only a partial list. There are some other good builds going on at www.subpirates.com you can check out.
        Hopefully this helps you.
        Take Care.
