    Just an idea

I was looking over some of my unbuilt plastic models kits when all of a sudden I had this idea. Here it goes...
Attach a 1/8 dia brass or stainless steel rod vertical to the sail or back of your sub. Next get a built up 1/72 or 1/100 scale Seahawk model or any other Navy heli and attach it to the top end.
With the sub surfaced it will look like the heli's doing a air to ship transfer like the scene in Hunt for red October.
Submerge the sub and the heli will look like it's conducting ASW operations with it's dunking sonar deployed. Just don't dive to deep though or you'll send your seahawk into the drink.
I'm just wondering if this setup would have any detrimental effect on the subs stability.

    yes.
    nice idea though.
you could tow a destroyer behind the sub in an eternal chase

I think I remember from one of Ray Mason's old SubRegatta tapes - someone doing this. It looked and ran great!

I wonder how the drag from the rod going up would affect the trim? Not too well I would guess.

          I like the idea.

          Lets

          I like the idea.

          Lets explore it..

It would look great on the surface, for a while, but not as a permenant thing. I think each course correction would gradually give the game away. Perhpas it could be removable, like a plug in to one of the periscope standards, or a hole in the deck. Then you could have the best of both worlds.

As for drag, surely it wouln't be any more than a periscope?? and with the heli posing as ASW dunkiing the speed would be very slow through the water (to look realistic). Your sub skippering will have to be really tight - holding her at PD at very slow speeds. But with auto pitch control and fine control of ballasting I think it could work very nicely.

btw I think it would be great fun to see the heli get a soaking if your sub depth control piloting got a bit wobbly

Were you thinking of motorising the heli's rotars, or using the clear disc mehod.

            addendum

            I just had another thought..

            addendum

I just had another thought.. If the heli and rod were removable, say a loose sliding fit into a tube somewhere on the sub, you could do a thing where you dive the sub too deep on purpose. At that point the heli would remain floating free as if it had landed on the surface. The rod would be a great keel weight which would hold the heli upright. Then you could go retrive it (...somehow!? , need a rescue boat or something).
Of course the heli would have to be water tight and bouyant, and be a type which can land on the sea.

            ..I'm just a big kid.

I agree with Steve. The rod's drag would be similar to that of a periscope.
As for motorizing the rotor blades, wouldn't it impart a gyroscopic effect causing the sub to heel to one side? I think the clear acetate disk would be much simpler.

                Just don't go to deep

Just don't go to deep or the helo will also being submerging as well, now that would be very interesting a submergable helo.
