Scale Sub made of brass - brass subs

    Hello Group ,

Has anyone ever built a scale sub from scratch out of
    sheets of brass ?
I have been thinking about starting a project like this for
sometime now . So I am looking for some sheet brass in a
roll 12"X12' long and about .016" thick , that should be
enough brass sheet to complete a 1/48 scale sub of the
    WWII era .
    Any thoughts or replys ??

Are you planning on making this a R/C model? The brass might reflect the radio signal.

I seem to recall an old issue of the Report that had a short note about a guy who was building a 1/50 GATO in brass sheet. A picture too. Brass would certainly up the ante on lifting the boat out of the water. My back goes into spasm just thinking about it!

Guy Takiguchi did up an absolutely beautiful RC Disney Nautilus in brass. You could probably e-mail him for the details. I seem to remember a posting on the old message boards about how his radio reception was and he didn't have any problems, (although this may have more to do with where he mounted his antenna).

There are more pics in the Subcommittee photo galler of this great sub project!

          Hi Darle,

I just completed the OTW Type VIIC U-boat hull with the Brass Tower. The tower wasn't impossible to build, but difficult to solder together at times. I used a small hand held butane torch and got the best results... There were times I tried to use a propane torch, but I had to limit it's use because the higher heat would warp the brass. Building a complete boat from Brass sounds like an interesting project... the best of luck!

            Hi,

When it comes to working with brass, you might want to look into getting a resistance solder tool.

I am able to put parts together that are right next to another joint without it heating up and having that fall apart!

Micro Mark has em for about $400 I think, but I got mine off of eBay for only $120. GREAT tool!

                Hello All ,
                Thanks for all

                Hello All ,
Thanks for all the replies on this subject .
I searched Ebay for the soldering tool and the brass sub
and couldn't find either item .
Oh well I will just have to make a weekly search until I
find what I am looking for .
I use a small hand held torch to solder with when I am
working with brass and getting better as time goes on .

I just need to decide on the thickness of brass to use
in this project . I have some .030" thick brass that I am
working with and I am thinking about making the ribs
for the sub out of it . Next problem is , which sub to
build ?? US Fleet Sub or German Type VII or IX ??

                      Hello Guys,

Well I checked out the brass sub and the resistance soldering
unit . Thanks for the help in finding those items ...
The resistance soldering tool I could use right now , it sure
would help when building my gear drive units that I sell .
However I will be using my hand held torch for a long time .
If sales increase where I am selling a lot of gear drives , then
maybe I could get a resistance solder unit

Is there any photos of the German U-Boat conning tower
                      built in brass ?
That would be nice to see .....
