Complete authenticity?

Now, having also been a railway modeller for a number of years, I know some people wear railwayman's caps/clothes for authenticity.
Is this a bit OTT do you think?

Not really. This is a supply source for reinactors, circa WWII. It's a whole different hobby. They're the "rivet-counters" of the history buffs.

I have been collecting militeria

I have been collecting militeria for over 45 years. It's very difficult to authenticate wheather the items are original or reproductions. Many honest dealers will tell you up front that the items they sell are reproductions or authenticated originals. Dealers like Manion or Johnson guarantee the items they sell and the price is at a premium. My advice, don't buy an "Originals?" on Ebay.

A few months ago, I built a mockup of a U-boat air search Periscope and mounted it on the wall in my library near where my OTW U-96 sets. I've ordered the U-boat captains cap form Soldat to hang on the periscope handle. I didn't want it aged because I'm not trying to impress anyone. Soldat's cap in made in Germany; that's why I chose that one...

The poodle hat was supposedly a standard uniform part for the Seehund midget u-boot drivers. It was very cramped inside and the poofy, pom-pom-like thingie on top let you know when you were close to bashing your head on something. And when you did, it offered a bit of light-weight cushioning for your head.

After crawling around inside a couple of Seehunds and bashing my head an embarassing number of times........... its purpose dawned on me.

It probably had the same purpose in a regular sized u-boot.

Everything looks great.The boat looks like its ready to take on the whole Allied Navy.What material did you make the scope out of,thats a nice touch to the decor of the room.The hat also looks great,nice addition .The only thing that seems out of place is you'you are to cleancut and pretty to be a "U Boot" Kommandt. Just kidding Great picts!!!!!!!!

The Periscope body is made from White Aspen wood and a heavy dense construction paper cover to get a high gloss metalic finish on the half barrel. I used styrofoam for the upper head and lower cable connection. The handles are made from a 3/4 inch dowel rod. I got the details of the Periscope from the book "Deutsche U-Boote geheim 1935-1945" by Richard Lakowski (German text with excellent official Kriegsmarine photos).

According to SOLDAT, the cap I purchased was manufactured by a company in Germany. I did not want a cap that was made anywhere else. Lately, India seems to be a current source for many reproductions.

now you are just

Don,
now you are just showing off!!! I did the eagle and the other bit of brass by polishing them to an almost mirror shine and the coating with laquer to protect the metal and to prevent tarnishing. But, how did you do such a nice plaque to go with it and duisplay all the important events and info on U96?

I am, at the moment, drilling all those flooding slots in the hull... and it is slowly driving me MAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDD!!!
