    Ohio class - boomer avalibility

Recently I sold my Copland Typhoon to someone with an Ohio also from Dave Copland. On thinking about it, there is no source out there for the , what I like to call "bruiser class" boomers.
I fully agree with Matt Thor on many points. It is the type of boat that there never would be a large market for. People who make the molds sure don't do it for the money. It has to do with the passion of the craft.
The boats I see at the meets are fantastic! Gail Phillips had an incredible Thor Seawolf that was museum quality at the last meet. First time in the water. Zero trim problems. Awsome boat Matt! But, for all the way cool boats, I can only recall a Typhoon at last year's national.
The hobby is going a few different directions with time, for sure. Not all of it is bad. There has been some good innovation (Thanks to Dave Welch and Art Broder<to name a few). But even on a limited scope of the high end glass kits, it seems there would be an interest in cranking out some boomers. Due to size of the real ones, 1/96 seems to be ideal scale.
Perhaps someone needs to enough interest here to justify a kit. Maybe a vendor could offer to set his email and let everyone know the number of serious,no leg pulling preorders people would do.

    I had a 32P Ohio

[color=#000000]I had a 32P Ohio hull years ago, and I regret ever letting it go. In fact I saw it then get resold....I could've choked!

But anyway, yes, I agree, an Ohio would be wonderful.

FYI I saw a beautiful Virginia at the Regatta...now available as a kit. 1/96, well detailed.

As an alternative, OTW's Vanguard is one impressive boomer. 1]

      One more thought about the

One more thought about the Ohio...

I think when it come to this class of boat, one deterrent, and a major one at that, is the lack of availability of a set of accurate plans. If you look back on the posts from these boards over the past couple of years, there are repeated requests for a good set of drawings. As far as I myself know, they have never really surfaced.

Sure, you can go online and find a huge selection of photos of the Ohio boats. Last week, during some boredom at work, I went looking myself and found about 150 unique photos in about 90 minutes of research. Many of them were very good, hi-res photos. But even these do not give the level of detail needed for a good production kit. I mean, yes we know the basic size and shape of the class, and the orientation of its major details. But even the best photos I've found don't show enough.

Also, to make it more complicated, I noticed subtle differences in detailing between the earlier and later boats. I dont know if these were due to changes made during later times in production, or differences from the different boat yards (were they built at more than one location? Not sure...) So, a kit representing the Ohio would look a bit different than say the last boat of the class. Maybe not enough differences to matter to the casual builder, but little details like those would probably drive a detail-oriented manufacturer nutty!

I like the 1/96 size/ It is a good standard that a lot of othe boats are scaled to.
Who sells the Virginia in 1/96?

          hi Wayne,
I think Pete Piekarski piehaus@aol.com makes some nice 1/96th scale subs, a USS SeaWolf SSN 21, and I think it was a USS Virginia , I know he had 2 kits at the Regatta, both in 1/96 scale, won an award for one of them,, both are kits he sells for RC. Jeff Jones

I would hope that the future would revive a market for Boomers. I am not sorry I sold my 32P Ohio, but do wish someone would produce an ACCURATE Ohio and Typhoon hull in 1/96. And Wayne, I agree with you, A Delta would be awesome. For now, I will finish my Lafayette Class Tecumseh and hope for a really decent Ohio hull.

As far as detail of the Ohio, yes it gets touchy sometimes getting detail.
However, Merrimen has an outstanding "how to" video which happens to be on a Copeland Ohio hull. In it he made a couple of small corrections, based on some photographs. The finished boat was awsome,of course. That was on a hull made years and years ago.
There is enough out there for an Ohio. And I feel like I have enough detail to present to crank out any modern Russian boomer.
I am very happy to hear there is one Virgina SO FAR being made. Did anyone get pictures of this boat? If so, I would like to see them please.
There is something about that Ohio class though, isn't there?
But, as I suggested in the first posting, any manufacturers interested in this idea enough to see if anyone is interested?
Is anyone interested in a "bruiser class" bommer enough to step up and say "I want one", and hope you are heard?

I would like to see an Ohio hull from Matt Thor as his work is wonderful.
Does anybody know what happened to 32p's molds?

Not to get too far off this subject, but if you look at Electric Boat's website, they have an artists conception of a '2nd generation' Virginia which utilizes a sail design similar to an Alfa. Really cool. As for a Russian hull, I would like to see a Delta IV and a Yankee I.

For you highspeed users out there, I posted the video I took at the Regatta of Pete's Virginia. It's only a few seconds long, but 4.8megs or so.

I too would dearly love a 1/96 Ohio, preferably
middle of the class, say 8th boat or so...
A big ugly Delta would be just as awesome.
I would preorder in a heartbeat sight unseen

Right after Steve gets done with the Type 17, he plans to venture into building a master for the Delta IV in 1/96 scale.
                            At last!!
Anyone interested should let Steve know....
                            Now, an Ohio. Anybody?

I am planning to start building an Ohio in 1/96 scale. I am in the planning and research phase of the project. It will probably be one of the new SSGN conversions. If anyone wants one let me know.
