John Shagane from Subron6 keeps jabbin' me about building a 1/96 Ohio. Said he'd buy one site unseen. Maybe that'll be my next project. I agree, I think 1/96 scale is da bomb. Big enough to fit a lot of detail, but small enough to lug to the pond (and out).
The big job will be to decypher all the detail differences between the various boats made along the way. I'm a stickler for detail, so whatever I build I want to be as right as can be. I think this part would drive me crazy.
Pete and I have been emailing back and forth with no trouble.
I ordered a Virginia class kit and will say that Pete's excellent level of workmanship is exceeded only by the level of professionalism in which he is handling my order. I am also 'nudging' him to do an Ohio class.
I've been following this thread and I've got a question, some of you are saying something about the differences throughout the class as it was being built. I am one of the thousands of people that have built this class (I started with the 729) and for the life of me I can't figure out what your talking about. Externally the Tridents were virtually identical. That is until the SSGN conversion. One comment was made about 1/96 being a good scale, being easy to transport, at 1/96 the Trident will have a LOA of about 6 feet, not a bad thing just keep this in mind. I have some pictures of a static wooden model on my members home page I'm repairing for a friend that I will be pulling masters from in 1/96 scale, stop by and check it out. With any luck and with the help Matt Thor I will be putting out a kit. No expected arrival date yet. This is my first attempt at this so bear with me.
A few minor changes were made in the class as constrcution proceeded. For example, the last few models had their countermeasure dispenser tubes moved back on the turtleback to a position aft of the missile tubes. I am working with Don Evans to develope plans to produce an extremely accurate OHIO Class SSBN. Please bear with me as I am buried in work and do not move very fast on anything anymore.
I have also had several requests to produce the 1/96 Virginia from the patterns completed 2 years ago. At this point, I really am hesistant to do it. The model performs very poorly, even in comparison to my SSN21 model. I know my source information is extremely accurate, and even followup interviews with current crew members of VIRGINIA show that the model does behave very much like the full size boat. It seems she has been a dissappointment on several fronts. I believe that the control surfaces must be increased in size by at least 20 % and the chord by at least 15% as we ended up doing on our latest SSN21 release. This may cure the problems, but until I get time to seatrial any changes, I do not want to release a poor performing model.
