Gato's exhaust pipe - Where is it?

Can anyone tell me exactly where a Gato class submarine's exhaust pipe is? I want to weather accordingly.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan,
    If you have Floating drydocks

    Jonathan,
If you have Floating drydocks plan book then page 39 puts the exhaust at frame 88/89 and at frame 99/100. They are located along the side of the super structure down low near the hull. If you don't have the plan book, let me know and I'll scan an image from a plan I have and send it to you via e-mail. I'll also send some pictures I have of real boats. Let me know if you have broad band or dial up. If you have dial up I'll have to first zip the file.

Sure thing. Give me a couple of days to sort through what I have and scan it. If the file is still too large after zipping then I'll just snail mail you a disk.

              Jonathon,

The engine exhaust is in the main hull, below the deck, about 1/2 of the way behind the conning tower. Take a look at this picture of RASHER, and you'll see the Diesel exhaust aft above the waterline. The pictures of HOE seem to indicate 4 Diesel exhaust ports in the hull.

The ships ventilation exhaust was in the conning tower.

Thanks Steve, it is a pretty small site, but better than none! I still have some work to do on Page II, adding captions and the like.

                Chips,
Thank you for the photos. I have another question now. Does anyone know if there are any exhaust ports on the starboard side of the Silversides? I know there are three on the port side (at least they all look like exhaust ports).

You are right, the Hoe does seem to have four outlets. One for each engine I guess. So why would there be three on the port side of Silversides? Unless for whatever reason they just put one on the starboard side and the other three on the port side. Confusing..... I wish I just LOOKED when I was in Muskegon.

Anyone ever floated down the channel in a boat and taken a picture of the starboard side? Anyone?

                Jonathan

                  Jonathan,
There are four main exhaust ports total, Two port and two starboard. The picture I sent you shows an aux port on the starboard side which is smaller than the main but I'm not sure if there is one on the port side. I will check my pictures of the Lionfish to see if I have a port side shot.
You could maybe e-mail the museum that has silversides and ask if they have pictures. Another thing you could check with them about is a list of plans for her, specifically a copy of the drydock plan. This will give you all the hull detail you need. I have a copy of the plan for USS Cobia and it was only $20.00 delivered. Hope this helps.

Yeah I guess I could do that.

This evening I will try and post a pic that I took showing the three "exhaust outlets".

                      Jonathon,

Here's a fleet sub operators manual that might help answer the questions. The fleet subs had 4 main Diesels and 1 auxiliary Diesel. The two main engines on the starboard side would exhaust thru the starboard hull. The two main engines on the port side would exhaust thru the port hull, The aux Diesel probably exhauste thru the port side - as you picture show three exhaust ports. The Diesel engin exhaust ports are something I want to include on my 1/96 scale GATO.
