i finally built my own sub! - booyah!

i finally got my first "real" sub up and running! it's a dynamic diver with a hull from CN Models and a home made WTC that's totally removeable for use in other subs. go to this links for some more infor and crude (sorry) pics.

bascially i took the CN Models' Alfa plastic model kit (which is in 1/200 scale). this kit is exactly the same as the CN Models Akula plastic model kit which is in 1/280 scale (how convenient). of course the only difference is the sonar pod thingy on the rudder of the akula platic kit. anyhoo, i took the alfa hull and removed the plastic protrusions and compartment on the inside so it was smooth. i made the stern fins out of some scrap plastic and the linkages are some 1mm (i think) servo wire-linkages. i wish i had a better digital camera since a picture is 1K words.

as for the WTC i just took 2 bottles and cut out their ends, then glued them together. the servos inside the WTC are in a little CF box which is epoxied to the inside of the WTC. all electronics can be removed except the servos. if the servoes need to be removed, i might as well make another WTC which isn't hard to do. problem is that it takes about 1 week for the tool dip (red stuff) and silicon glue to fully dry.

oh, and the sub is about 15 inches long

i only tested her in a bathtub, but she as a very tight turning radius at medium speed. as for diving and surfacing...i'm gonna have to wait a week at least until the neighbor's pool is fixed since it is a dynamic diver, trying to dive at full speed is impossible as i end up getting ventilation

ok, so surfacing is a breeze (at least in 10 inches of water) but diving is another story. i can only get the sub to dive if i have the right throttle speed. if it's too fast it ventilates. if it's too slow, te sub can't get enough underwater before ventilation starts again. i assume i'm using the word "ventilation" correctly here. basically the screw is so close to the surfact that is just sprays water everywhere. and of course, i get this spray 9 times out of ten when trying to dive the sub in the bathtub. granted, it is a small space, but this problem needs to be fixed. so what could i do? i've tried adding more weight, but that doesn't help since if it's too heavy, it will sink to the bottom. maybe there's some trick with the trimming and balancing?

              ok, so i added weight

ok, so i added weight to my sub so that it was literally "flinking" but still able to float. of course, i was able to dive within my bath tub but at about 30% throttle. i guess this might b the only way to get it to tdive reasonably. and since HDPE is a soft plastic i assume i can't take it down too deep since the pressue will probably shrink the WTC enough keep it at the bottom of the pool.

If she still ventilating? If the problem persists maybe that depends on details]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_biggrin.gif[/img] ). 2. Overall balance, is the front heavier then the back? If your sub is free-flooding, might try adding foam.

                  no ventilation since i made

no ventilation since i made the sub just barely float. but i can't push the throttle too hard either when trying to dive. oh well, i guess i'm gonna have to just weigh the alfa down. and yes, when the bow goes down, the stern goes up, and w/o enough weight to begin with, the stern stick up out of the water including the dive planes. the sub is perfectly trimmed and balanced. i even tried making the stern extra heavy but that didn't seem to keep the stern down when trying to dive.

I have that very same model I took with me to Indy last year!
I would love to make that sub RC'ed and I have a Seawolf also under the bed that I kept for a rainy day
So I'm wondering if you can send me some pictures of your setup again and what size/type of servos did you use?
Motor speed controller and reciever as well..
