Ok guys,
What did everyone think of the Short Alfa stories and pictures in the march Report?
I agree,first of all,that there should be more "how-to" articles and some build-ups. But I am just trying to do something cool for our hobby. Did you like it? I think it may be the first time anyone really heard from the other side.
Hope everyone liked the pictures.
Now, would you be interested in Sergy writing some more things about life and times in the Russian submarine service?
He has offered to write more if yall want to hear more. And I am willing to do something on a different class of Russian submarine, if you would like to see it.
I can do something on the Typhoon , Akula, or Beluga in the next few issues.
I would like to hear feedback from our group

I agree with you, that the "How To" aticles are very good and helpfull; but it's also fun to read about "been there, done that" accounts form the people who were really there serving on the boats. Be they Americans, Russian's, Brit's, German's, whatever!

A very interesting report about a rather exotic boat. Any more particulary dry dock pics or internals would be good.

I do not wish to be disrespectfull, I think it's awesome that your Russian friend is contributing, He has pedigree. However is it possible to edit his grammar to make it a little more understandible. I hope this does'nt offend.

Not at all. Actually, I did not want to veer too far from his words. Even though it can be a little off the proper english, it actually took quite some time to get it the way it was without loosing exactly what he was saying. First , I translate it from Russian to English. Then the fun begins. Words ,just because they are now in english do not flow in the same chain as our english. So I had to rearrainge some words without damaging any of the content,which I was not going to change. His exact thoughts are the best part of the story.
I remember the running lights , for example , litterly translated into running fires.
We have learned to bear with the aboritions in the translation of our languages. It is funny sometimes the base words I seek to explain something to him. I asked about the propellor on the Alfa. He got a big kick out of that. Propellors belong on airplanes. On a submarine it is a screw.
I have managed to find two other Alfa drivers, but Sergey is the friendlest by far. He actually is a pretty nice guy. And I can tell he is truly interested in our goings on and has been very patient giving me much guidence.
He does draw the line on classified things. He has said exactly "I am a patriot and will not give the secrets of my country". I respect that. Integrety is sometimes hard to find. This coming from a man who gave much for his country without regret or complaint, when we know the hardships he had to , and in some ways, still , has to bear.

...we made a conscious decision to not make Sergey's text 'perfect' English. The idea was to see if we could retain the flavor of the original Russian that we translated into English.

Da, comrad! Keep the Russian flavor. But perhaps a few footnotes could be included to clarify some of the more difficult passages. Or maybe a breif glossary to translate any uniquely Russian terms and expression.

More please! I would like to hear about the Typhoon! You know with a popular movie like Hunt for Red October giving a rather inaccurate idea of a varied Typhoon, I'd like to know what a Typhoon is really like (you know what I mean by inaccuracies, right? like mirrored periscopes )
