First UK Sub Regatta - Proposal............

    Okey dokey folks!

Some may remember me fishing for a reponse on a possible indoor pool meet in the winter at Potters Bar.

Never really came to much, because I only had a small response, with very few committing to defintiely attending- ho hum.

One of the opinions expressed, was that indoor pools tend to promote condensation inside the boats, and that the high level of chlorine usuaully present can really play havoc with the radio signal.

So an outdoor pool would be better............but where?

Well imagine my surprise when i found out about a small pool in the grounds of Middlesex University in North london, which happens to be just minutes from where I live!

A few enquiries has turned up the following information-

The pool is used by students and members from the Whitsun bank holiday until late August.

    It's available for private hire.

It is untreated with chlorine when not in use.

The pools dimensions are 90 x 25 feet, and depth is about 6 feet, and 3 feet shallow end. Okay, not the biggest puddle in the world, but at least the water won't be murky, and it's big enough for most boats to have fun in.

Excellent free parking facilities onsite, and there is a free bus service from Oakwood tube station (Piccadilly Line) to the main campus, where the pool is located.

    Now the question-

Anyone interested in a sub regatta at this venue?

There may be a small fee to recover costs (still waiting for a quote) but we would have exclusive use of the facility.

        Small world isn't it!

Well that's one on the books so far! lol

Still waiting to hear back from the site manager on a price to hire the facilities.

It hinges on how many life guards are required apparently.

Nick, I don't think there would be a problem with wheelchair access. The site is pretty flat.

I would check the wheelchair access, I remember there being quite a few steps around the manor house.

But it may have been improved since I was last there.

                I was thinking early May,

I was thinking early May, before the pool is chlorinated for the Summer.

I guess I could extend invitations to vendors. OTW, Sheerline and Pandan/Subtech come to mind.

I'm working towards one day. I think a weekend would be rather costly, not to mention the organisational requirements!

Okay, so I'm going to have to go see if they have aramp to the poolside for wheelchair access.

                      Andy,
                      sorry about the size

                      Andy,
sorry about the size - it was a direct link from a swimming club website. It is a bit on the large side, I must agree.
Interestingly, it says 'depth 0.75m' on one sign and 'no diving' on the other! Obviously for the swimmers and not for our subs - lets hope the enfield borough council dont send sombody to keep us on the surface!!! lol

Had you also noticed that if you go down the hill, away from the manor house, that there is also a big lake too!!??
Could we also make use of that, perhaps?

                      Regards,

                      Paul.

I didn't know about the lake.

However I would say this- it's probably best to keep everyone in the same place.

Can you imagine the problems with clashing frequencies etc.

Still waiting to hear from Miss Spray regarding a price for hire.

Nick, in spite of the fact that I cannot remember there being any wheelchair access - given that it is a University campus, I would be very suprised if they dont have that sort of facility these days, it is 2005 not 1975 after all. Failing that, I shall carry you! Seriously though, I dont think you will be disappointed - look forward to seeing you there.

                            Paul.

I suppose we should start thinking of a promotional poster, what do you think Andy?
