Submarine 707R UX-01 CAD Modeled 3D Resin Printed

This is a new build effort done in large part with my good friend Matt Thor.

As few hobbyists in this genre know, many many years ago at the beginning of the 3d printing revolution I was (if not the first), one of the first to design and build a fully 3d printed submarine from the exact same story in the subject of the main anime movie version of the submarine 7072 R.

Check out the final video of it's first time in water doing the trimming. https://youtu.be/3qAHWtm2Zvw

In my obsession with perfection I dropped the 7072 project, sold the hull on ebay to a mysterious buyer for way too cheap and started over from scratch on a more screen accurate version of the 7072. I also began working on all the other subs from the movie, but my biggest wish aside from owning a 20K nautilus was to build what I regard as the coolest sub ever. The UX-01 from the Anime movie Submarine707R. This thread is the documentation of this new project. As of right now the hull is being printed in super high strength resin by Matt. So it will be quite smooth and VERY detailed. We will be glassing the inside before moving on to the electronics. Laslty I will paint it with my custom color scheme based closely on the movie version with some extra details.

Again I hope you enjoy it as much I do.

I should mention that many years ago I tried to do this kit from the ground up in a the old school way of cross-sections and foam in fill with sanding and sanding, but through moving and time it became clear I could not execute it in that mode. So I opted to use technology I am more comfortable with and that produced a much higher level of perfection to my standard and desires. I built it in CAD and now after 15 years in the making it is coming to light via the magic of 3D printing in high resolution high strength resin. standard SLS ABS printing cannot touch the accuracy and smoothness of DLP Resin Printing.

These were the first efforts to get to the level of accuracy I obsesses about in terms of design aesthetics and physical precision considering the fictional nature of this boat and the limited resources available to reproduce it in reality. I used a few models I was fortunate to find on eBay and using a my design skills I produced blue prints and cross sections to produce the 3d models.

Here are the latest images provided by Matt Thor of the 3d printed nose cone. I should mention that this subject is VERY fictional in form. So to those who would scoff at it's lack of practical realism I would say - again it's based on an Anime and my interest in it is purely the joy of physically beholding it in reality. A life long dream. So be cool and don't squash my fun. I do intend to make it functional but I got no interest in BS.

I should mention the dimentions of the sub are 28" long with an insanely thick 8" beam.

We could not go much longer as the beam is so huge that it became ridiculous so I settled on 28" so it is long enough for a WTC to fit but not so long that the beam could fit a child in it.

More print updates. The resin being used is very high strength but will be backed by cloth glass and resin. So coupled with some paint it should be very robust.

Some fun stuff from the anime movie. This is one of the main subs from the Anime. In the movie there are two factions. The main equivalent of the real UN called PKN (Peace Keeping Nations) and the USR (Under Sea Revolution) consisting of a secretive billionaires' submarine force hidden in a place no one in the PKN knows of. In the movie the PKN is trying to locate and destroy the USR once and for all by bringing all the nations sub forces together with their best captains and one sub from every nation in a single ocean spot. Not the most strategic event choice. The image below is the American submarine which is supposed to be the most advanced in the world with the help of an onboard AI powered super computer capable of computing an enemy location and action before it has happened. It's all kind of dumb really unless you ignore reality. Keep in mind this was made in like 2003 when AI was still a fantasy. In our world today its quickly becoming less a dream and more a reality.

This is the lower rear section of the hull requiring 50+ hours of print time. It will require washing a curing then removing the supports.

I added the final parts of the lower rear section. Next is the upper hull and deck and finally all the greblies, fins, and planes. I'd say it's about 2/3 of the way there in terms of volume to print.

Here is the deck sections post print. I find it absolutely amazing that we can imagine something design it and bring it in to reality in so much less time than ever before.
