USS Jimmy Carter SSN 23 1/96

Well here we go with this build and some help that I got from David Merriman.

I first had to purchase two Seawolf hulls in order to make SSN 23 hull that is 12 1/2 inches longer than the normal Seawolf model.

Dave had to make a jig to get the upper hull to pull in some so that it would match the lower hull.

While we were waiting we worked on the drive cylinder and the ballast tank had to be 1/3 longer than what is required by the Seawolf.

Getting ready to make the Z cuts.

Z cuts are already done and joined together.

More will come at a later date.

This is going to be a fun build!
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Some additional photos of this build.

I think you all know this guy.

Tern planes and dihedrals are in place. The controls surfaces will be put in place later by me.

More to come at a later date.

Here is a photo that shows the Jimmy Carter next to my model of the Kidd DDG 993 that is 70" long.

Some photos of the work being done on the seems, we all know how this goes.

Ok here is a little bit more of this build.

After a few days of working at it I was able to get the stern planes in and aligned with each other.

When the stern planes are at full rise the two magnets are separated by 1/32" but they do come back together when the servo moves back. Should I have any concerns for this or is it ok? They stay close together by the attraction of the magnets like they are still trying to get back together.

Duane, I like what you are doing here. This will look great in the water when you finish.

Duane, You could make a simple brass wire clip to install across the magnets to ensure they stay coupled. Only takes a second to install or remove.
