I just heard about a new line of E-Maxx waterproof servos announced for early 2008, by Traxxas. I have not seen specs yet, but the prices are around $30.

Great find Art. This could be a real boon to rc subs, especially the guys with small WTCs, bow planes, torpedo launchers etc...and not a lot of room to play with.

It appears Traxxas is making them for steering use in their RC trucks that are "mudders". Tower Hobby has them listed as in stock by mid-December.

Thanks for the tip guys. I've just "back ordered" 4 from Tower Hobbies and I'll let you all know what they're like when I get the chance to test them. I imagine that using waterproof servos would leave heaps of room in any WTC for more ballast/buoyancy for the Revel Gatos .............wouldn't they? The ones in the regatta DVD looked a little on the heavy side.

Someone ( I can't remember

Someone ( I can't remember who) told me they have run ordinary servos in the 'wet' for years.

Apparantly, all you do is disassemble the servo and paint the circuit board with Plasti-dip http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/plastidip.html

Seems like a good idea to me, but I haven't tried it. Our micro servos will snap apart so you can get at the tiny circuit board.

Yes that person was most

Yes that person was most likely me ,it works great but be sure to use a dust/ water resistant servo for they have an o ring on the out put shaft.
And fill the gearbox with silicone grease.

I've just received my first

I've just received my first 4 waterproof servos via UPS. Here's a look at their dimensions:





They have Futaba style plugs and really look the goods for the Revel Gato conversion.

Has anyone tried them out in a model yet?
I'm planning on retro-fitting one into one of my Revel Type VIIs in the new year (I'm working right through Christmas and New Year, unfortunately) and I'll post performance results then.

The last mod seems to be the best: covering the electronics with epoxy or neutral silicon sealant, fill the gears box with mineral oil and attach an o-ring to the servo output shaft. This can make rc-ing a small model much easier... thinking on Trumpeter's Gato.
