    Photos Needed SubRegatta 2008

Hey guys - if you were at SubRegatta 2008 and took photos - please send me your best 5-10 photos with captions.

We need photos for the SCR and we would like the biggest selection possible. Our deadline is short so we can get the article in the Sept issue.

Send pix, plus a word document with captions, names etc to me at

    president@subcommittee.com

    Thanks!

          Tim,
I'm going to guess that that is Johann Sauer (sorry if spelled wrong). That Type XXI looks bigger than the one I remember from the R.I. regattas.
          Kevin,
It's pretty cool when you see Johann show up with his boats strapped to the top of his car. If memory serves me right I think he lives in PA. so I'll bet he gets a lot of double takes from other people on the road.

                  I passed and was passed

I passed and was passed by Johann on I-70 on the way home, and a lot of truckers were talking on the CB Radio about that guy with the little car with a submarine on the roof.He looked at me pretty strange when I tried to get his attention. I was the guy with the little black GMC pickup.

                      Tim,
Does this one have as much power as his XXI? He used motors that are used to start gas R/C plane engines in that one! Man could that thing move.

                        motors

The motors he has in that boat are HUGE!!!! He had to remove them and when I saw them I was amazed. Around 4" diameter by 6'' long just guessing. He said that he scratch built the boat and had around $185 in material in making the hull. He used drafting tape for the panel lines and just painted over them for a great look.

                          Unless Johan as built another

Unless Johan as built another boat (always a possibility), he's got a Type XVIII and not a Type XXI..... Can anyone confirm?

                            Jeff,
                            I have pictures here some

                            Jeff,
I have pictures here some where of the boat I'm thinking about, I talked to Johan about it so much I'm surprised he didn't tell me to run along, but it was a type XXI. Even he said so. It was painted differently than the one Tim posted pics of. I found what I was talking about and scanned them. They are from my old 35mm so sorry about the quality. I also have one from the night run he made, he took the gun turret out and put a halogen light fixture in it place but that boat was so fast the picture is just a greyish streak of light so I didn't scan it.
                            Here they are.

                              Hmmm......I remember seeing that same

Hmmm......I remember seeing that same sub at Groton in 2002(?) and I'm almost certain that he was calling it a Type XVIII then. Of course the external differences between the '18' and the '21 are relatively minor. Now I'm wondering if he modified the boat into the Type XXI!
