Hi guys!
Jeff Porteous here. This is essentially a re-posting (now topic-exclusive, and including some new info.) of an item brought up earlier in the other So. Cal. thread in the Events section. (Mr. LaRue, feel free now to delete that former version if you are so inclined.)
A new aquatic theme park has nearly completed construction here in my own base of operations: La Mirada (roughly at the border between L.A. and Orange Counties, just north of Buena Park). I contacted the park's director immediately upon learning of plans for this development, and essentially have secured an invitation for local R/C submariners to participate in some manner in their opening festivities.
Here's the latest: a local newspaper reported this week that the park is now scheduled to open by late October, with some form of official ribbon-cutting ceremony slated for early November.
Exact dates, times and details have yet to be announced, especially for OUR participation, but I'll be in contact with the director again soon to try to nail something down. Since most of us must deal with the sorry necessity of day jobs, I'll be suggesting we R/C submariners be allowed to do our thing at some point over a weekend.
As more info. becomes available, I'll of course be posting it here in this thread. Fellow local members I know or have met can also (eventually) look forward to individual e-mail updates: Neil Schmidt, Tim Guest, Dave Manley, Will Oudmayer, Mike Dory, Joe Park, Rick Galinson, Lee Upshaw, Steve Neill, Dan Rose, Ed Cannady, Chris Caffee -- this means you. ANYONE wanting to be on an e-mail list about this event, however -- and I mean all you Northern Calif. types potentially interested in a trip south as well -- please get in touch and let me know (as Tim Guest did).

Called "Splash," the complex consists of several types and sizes of pools -- including a moat-like "river" snaking around a kitschy pirate-themed kids' area. The giant Olympic pool is still under construction at this point, but the other pools are already in and water-filled. (For more info., go to http://www.cityoflamirada.org/ and click on "Splash.") I visited the actual park site just yesterday (Sept. 8th) and took photos of current progress. I'll post a few below.

To be honest, the idea is not so much to participate in the park's opening celebration for its own sake, but by doing so to create enough excitement and good will to encourage permission for at least semi-regular followup Fun Runs thereafter. (Back in June, SubRon 5 enjoyed the use of the entire pool complex at Texas A&M University, so stranger things have happened!)
I believe the trump card for our verbal pre-agreement on SubCommittee participation was the DVD I sent of the '05 SubRegatta -- the one featuring plenty of local TV news coverage. Naturally, the park will be looking for maximum publicity with their opening, and we can help with that. Hey, WE know subs are sexy -- people will come! Of course, the SubCommittee is always looking for PR opportunities as well, so this could prove quite a symbiotic initial Fun Run. (Which reminds me: Tim Smalley, if you're reading, any chance we could borrow a vinyl SubCommittee banner when the time comes?)
As I said, details are not yet worked out. But I will follow up with more info. when available, and hope the SubCommittee's Southern California bubblehead contingent will be interested in making a good showing.
Green board,
JeffP
