My first time to travel by air with my boat. How do you guys carry your boats in the plane? TSA issues, checked in, hand carry? My boat is 44" long home made wood hull. What will TSA ask to allow me to bring it aboard the airplane. I am planning to make a home made cardboard box to carry it which the dimensions are about 8x8x46. weight is way under 12 lbs.

My last experience with trying to put my Permit on a plane ended in a mess. First of all forget about carrying it on. The average TSA agent has the IQ of toothpaste and will be convinced that it is a clever explosive device in camouflage (I am speaking from experience). Second of all, if you check it as baggage your boat will be removed from its container and inspected by the airline/TSA security services. My boat made it two days late and with extensive damage. I learned my lesson. I'll never take it with me again! I now fly to the events but send my boat ahead by Fedex ground. I have had zero problems with that approach. Make certain to remove your internals (WTC). Send the hull and WTC separately. This prevents damage to the hull from all of the weight of the internals.Last edited by thor; 12-13-2015, 11:42 AM.Regards,

Hi Guys, I was at the Sub Fest meeting and the them this year is based on the Beatles yellow submarine. If any one wishes to sleep on the USS Cobia it will be open Friday and Saturday night. The museum has showers and your gear would have to be hidden during the day for tours.
If you want to ship your sub ahead of time, contact Wendy Lutzke at wlutzke@wisconsinmaritime.org. The museum has handled many ships shipped to them, they will take good care of it till you get here.
They are hoping there will be a few subs for night runs on Friday and Saturday nights.
More to come.

In mid February, we made reservations for SubFest 2016 at the Best Western Lakefront Hotel, 101 Maritime Dr. We received an e-mail with a confirmation number. This is the hotel closest to the Maritime Museum. As I was checking the Wisconsin Maritime Museum site last night, I found out that the Best Western Lakefront Hotel is now the Baymont Inns & Suites Manitowoc Lakefront. This morning we called the hotel to confirm our reservation, and there was no record of it. So we made new reservations with Baymont. Apparently when Baymont took over for Best Western there was a problem with transferring over the room bookings' or Best Western just deleted all bookings for the Lakefront Hotel.
For those interested, here's the hotel info:

The Museum has T-shirts at no cost for participants and volunteers for sub fest. If you are planning on attending Sub Fest e-mail me your sizes and I'll pick them up for you, they are going fast. Sizes XL and smaller is all that are left.
