You got me on that one. Yes, I agree with you that each boat was as unique as a fingerprint. I think the configuration you see on the Trigger may be the result of the fact that she was one of only eight Gato boats built at Mare Island. Mare Island generally followed Portsmouth's designs since they were both US Navy yards. Besides the Trigger photo you point out, I have found photos of the Silversides, Wahoo, and Sunfish, all Mare Island boats, with similar #2 'scope supports. I'd like to find pictures of the Whale, Tunny, Tinosa, and Tullibee and see if they are the same.
So, it looks like there are three different configurations regarding the support for #2 'scope; SJ aft of #2; SJ forward of #1 and SD aft of #2; and now Mare Island built. I'll see how long this holds up.
