      Delta class boats were follow-ons

Delta class boats were follow-ons to the Yankee (Project 667A) SSBN class. Delta I (667B, 18 built) carried 12 2 stage R-29 liquid fueled missiles of 4,200 mile range. Delta II (667BD, 4 built) carried 16 of the same missiles. The two variants were equipped with twin VM-4B reactors of 52,000 SHP. Delta III (667BDR, 14 built) also carried 16 R-29s, but had a new reactor (twin VM-4S) of 60,000 shp. All had test depths of 450 meters (roughly 1500 ft). The Delta IV (667BDRM, 7 built) carried 16 3 stage R-29RM variant missiles with 4 MIRV warheads.

        Delta III underway:

        A drydock view

        Delta III underway:

A drydock view of a Delta III.
The III and IV are,at first glance similar. But if you look again, they are very different. Here, one can see the different shape of the bow as compared to the IV's round bow and torpedo tube placement.
Differences reflect the major upgrades to the IV series boats.
