    Sam,
Thats not the half of it. There are still hull penetrations down each side of the boat you could do. Depends on how carried away you want to get. I haven't decided yet myself and since I'll end up waiting til Christmas to get mine I have time.

are there covers for those holes

ie any kinds of screens or are the fully open to the ocean?
i agree that revell did a great job for the cost, it just seems that once the deck ends and the hull begins is where the spending ended...nothing as far a free flooding holes and patches around the torpedo tubes...
again don't get me wrong, its a great value and i might justify later to get another one for another conversion (i don't think one cod will be enough)

        I received my model today.

I received my model today. It was well packed, and not a part broken that I could see with a quick inspection. I will say that the 2 major hull halves will have to be "worked" a little once I have to join them. They are two pretty large pieces of plastic, and the have some spring to them when mating them up.
It does look funny to see no vents at all below the waterline.

I'll probably wait a while myself to start this kit, and see what aftermarket components begin showing up.

I have the same question. I had the impression that they were opened by Kingston valves and so no really opened to the ocean all the time.

I have never seen a photo of the real thing showing those openings.

            Sam and Pablo,
I have talked with my wifes uncle who served on at least two fleet boats and he has told me the ballast tank oppenings are just open holes. No grating of any kind. The kingston valves I believe are located up under the superstructure, I'll look into that. I remember seeing a picture somewhere that showed this I just have to find it.

that's good to know. Having the layout/location of those holes means simple drilling, and no framing or detail needed...

I have the pictures, of the special tanks flood and vent gear, from the Enlisted Quals manual. If anyone wants a scan, email me at: mkeatingss(at)cox (dot) net.

PS. I also have scans of the Flood and drain hole patterns, for the Balao and Tench class boats.

OK. let me try this again. I'm going to attempt to post the Gato ballast flood pattern here. I *believe* I got these from Mike Keating.

                    Crikey, it worked!

                        Tom,
                        That would'nt be the plan

                        Tom,
That would'nt be the plan for the USS Cobia would it? I have a copy from the Wisconson Maritme Museum, a plan like that is a must for any Fleet boat nuts collection.

                              Ballast tank openings

Once Christmas has passed I'll be taking a trip to the USS Alabama Museum in Mobile, AL where the USS Drum is located. Unlike the Pampanito in San Fran, the Bowfin in Hawaii, and Cobia in Milwaukee, the Drum is displayed out of the water so I hope to be able to get below the WL photo details of those specifically discussed in this thread.
I will post my pictures as soon as I get them. If anyone presently has any other detailed pictures of the USS Drum, it would be greatly appreciated.

                                Docking Plan

Hi Tom, I have to admit, you didn't get those plans from me. They look like Gato docking plans. Maybe from Floating Drydock. I've got Tench, but not Gato.
However, I will try to get the Tank drawings off, to you.
