    Revell 1/72nd Gato is here!!

I went to an Antique toy show today and was surprised to see the new 1/72 Revell Fleet boat on a table!! I was also surprised the box isn't any bigger than the Type VII box. Well The hull comes in 6 pieces. Mine was still in its shipping box. On one end is a sticker that reads "Dated Merchandise New Release Product DO NOT SHIP BEFORE NOV 8 2006" guess he jumped the gun a bit . Overall a super nice kit with tons of RC potential. I am happy to see so much interest in 1/72nd scale subs as I think this works out to a very nice size model for most boats. I have been building RC subs in 1/72nd for over 10 years.

    ,,,,

    hi Schimitty,
I couldn't agree with you more on the 1/72nd scale for the subs. After dragging along the 8' 300Lb type IX the last 10 years this is a welcome site.. With all the work the vendors are doing, like Big Dave with his miniture WTC's and the detail Revell has to offer I hope this will continue. I am hoping Revell will keep this going as another source for our model submarines.
I was reading on another web site, can't recall which, but a few guys said they were going to pass on this kit because its too perfect! "now thats really something to cry about, LOL",, gezzzz can't please everyone I guess. But hey, I'll take a non-scale "perfect" sub any day! I was also glad to see Steve N. come out with the 1/72nd Blueback kit.... Very cool. Hope to see a return of the 1/72nd Sturgon also, I know this was a popular kit at one time, don't know why Dan quit making them. Good Luck, keep us posted, still waiting on mine from MegaHobby, Jeff Jones

        Schmitty,

        Schmitty,
Got my Gato this morning.I ordered mine from E-Bay cost was $79 and some change + $10.00 shipping. My question is did I get the one that has been advertised for so long now.It is the same one that you have occording to the photo that you posted and the directions state that it was built by Revell/Monogram,but the box art is different than the one that has been posted for the last many months.Could that other one be the Revell/Germany kit that everyone has been asking about? Also just to ask a simple question of the group,"is the quality of our kit the same as that of the other kit"because I HAVE SEEN TWO VASTLY DIFFERENT PRICES.

          Got GATO,

          hey Guys,
The Gato just showed up, already started on it, glued the stand together, and was just checking out the rest. Maybe there should be a special subject text just for the build of this beast for R/C. I really wasn't expecting this kind of detail, and the hull size is really larger than what I was thinking it would be, a huge plus. Just ordered it last Fri. from Megahobby for 84.00 including shipping. Nice fast servie.
Ok, now , how are we going to make the fwd dive planes retract ?? Lots of room, in my 1/48th fleet boat I had a water proof servo that operated perfectly for almost 7 years, thanks Jeff Jones

                ..

                hey TD,
There are a lot of photos of the larger fleet boats with working dive planes, inside shots,, shouldn't be to hard to just scale it down,, I might try making the fwd planes out of some other material, brass, aluminum, something I can drill into, and add a hinge "basically a piece of wire with a small turnbuckel" to and not break it. I will post a pic when I get a sample made and see what you guys think. Basically , make one like they are, but make it stronger material. The side hole where the pivot rod goes through the hull will have to be slotted. Really glad to see the 8 holes up forward where the anchor well is already molded in,, would hate to have to file those... Jeff J.

There is an article in the forthcoming Dec SCR that has some good inside shots of the foreplane actuators of Jim Butt's fleetboat. Should be of help!

                              1/72 Fleetboat

I don't know how many of you know this, but Scale Shipyard has a PE set made for this scale already. Lee had it made up some time ago for his 1/72 fleetboat.
