Gato Flood Ports, Questions for Stark and Boss Subfixer

Stark has a gato drawing posted on his home page that he says Subfixer gave him. It shows the flood port locations on Gato's lower hull. It's perfect for adding the flood ports to Trumpy's or Revell's Gato. I want a copy. Where did it come from? Floating Drydock? Could either of you gent's tell me where to get it, or could you e-mail me a copy? I've got Revell's Gato on back order.

The plan came from the Wisconsin Maritime museum and is for the USS Cobia. This is the page with the information you need, http://www.wisconsinmaritime.org/reproduction.htm The number you need to request is 2025-22 and ask for the 1944 version. The copy you will get is in 1/48th scale so it's very big (almost 10 feet long). Sorry I don't have an electronic version of it. Hope this helps.

Appreciate the reply. Floating Drydock has a similar plan in 1/96 scale as well. But I'll contact the museum anyway.

I looked at a copy of the floating drydock plan for the Balao in 1/96th, #TFW-24. Don't get this one, it does not show any of the bottom details your looking for. A good resource to have is the Gato/ Balao plan book. It has just been re released in electronic format.

Hi Don,
FD has quite a few plans of Gato, so I dropped them a line with a discription of Stark's plan. Tom Walkowitz came back with the recommendation in the header. I don't know how much difference between EB built boats and those from Mantiwoc would have been. But my goal is SS218, ater her refit in Mare Island in 44 prior to her last patrol. I had an Uncle on board. I have the Gato/Balao eBook. It doesn't have any drawings of flood ports. Tom was real quick with the delivery. Only four days from order placed to Cd in my mailbox. Has two good shots of Albacore's sail after the 44 refit. I noticed on your homepage a Gato/Balao hull with flood ports, by the way. Nice work. I also have a copy of the Official US Submarine Loss'es from my grandmother. It has A large copy of Albacore off of Mare Island in 44. That shot is also on Navsource and in the back of the eBook. Anyway, I'm collecting what info on Albacore I can find and waiting for my Revell kit.

I have the U.S.S. Cod

I have the U.S.S. Cod Photo Museum Guide. On page 6 there is a picture of some flood ports, but, I can't tell exactly where they are located.

Any chance that someone can post a drawing showing where the flood ports are located?

Free Flood Holes

Those holes, on in the lower hull, shown on page 6 in the Cod photo guide, are the free flood holes for the chain locker, and the void aft of it. Each was about 3 feet long. And, if I remember right, they were separated by a perforated bulkhead.
The chain locker starts just aft of the torpedo tube outer (muzzle) doors and goes from top to bottom of the hull. The void is the next space, aft of it. It is outside of the pressure hull, so letting it flood kept it from effecting ship's trim. Or collapsing at depth.
As far as I was concerned, it was just another big, cramped space, that had to be chipped and painted, every time we went into the yards.
As far as the Flood Ports,, check out Nautilus Models, apparently they're going to release some kind of stencil for the floods.

Mike, I have the test shot for the Trumpeter 1/144 Gato from Nautilus Models. It's a vinyl overlay that has all the ballast tank floods and other oepnings in their correct location and shapes. You use it to drill out & shape the holes, then remove the template. They also have Balao & Tench versions. The 1/72 version is not far behind.

You use it to drill out & shape the holes, then remove the template. They also have Balao & Tench versions. The 1/72 version is not far behind.

I was hoping that one of the manufacturer's was going to come up with some sort of tempalte...thanks for the update Tom...

I used the prints from

I used the prints from Floating Dockyard,get the "Gato Docking Plan" Bu-SS212-54 for the flood vents and I also picked up "G/A Outboard Profile" Bu-SS212-1/4 to help me locate a lot of detail that I couldn`t find elsewhere.The only problem is they are in 1/48 scale and that is about 10 ft. long per print.But they are both very good and show a lot of detail that I missed in various pictures.
