Skizzenbuch: U-Boat Type VII C Project

For all of the Type VIIC U-boat fans out there.....here is something that you will want to read.

SubCommittee member Don Prince is making available for download a true labor of love. It's the definitive reference on how the Type VIIC U-boat was to be operated. The Skizzenbuch (sketch book) provides the detail much in the same way that the U.S. Navy piping-tab booklets provide information.

Here's what Don has to say about his effort:
This book - “Skizzenbuch: U-Boat Type VII C Project” is the result of over five (5) years of technical research and collaboration with: Tore Berg-Nielsen (Norway – Engineering Officer of U-995). Maciek Florek (Poland – WWII Technical Documentation Expert - Deceased in 2017), Simon J. Morris (New Zealand – Technical Artist), and Mark Hessburg (Germany - Translation Advisor).

Several years ago, I signed a publishing contract for Skizzenbuch. However, The original German mechanical and electrical schematics required a page size of 11 x 17 inches to be readable and with a total page count of 516 pages including the book covers and the index. These factors alone took Skizzenbuch out of the publishing business along with the color requirement of well over 780 photos and diagrams. I never intended Skizzenbuch to be a for-profit endeavor; I just want it to be the reference book for the WWII German Type VII C U-Boat and for the U-Boat enthusiast. I hope you enjoy all the work and efforts that we put into this book…

Don has taken the original German schematics and associated drawings and provided translations as well as color-coded overlays showing which components are utilized for a given operation like diving and surfacing.

The SubCommittee is very appreciative that Don has chosen this venue as the means for making this work available.

    -many thanks,

Wow, what a gift! That is an incredible reference. Thank you!
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

              Hi Jeff,

Here are the attached photos of the only known printed version of Skizzenbuch. The metal leather covered post binder and the 11 x 17 inch 80 pound card stock paper and the printing cost came to about $690.00. This was my Christmas present to me!

              Regards,
              Don_

                Don,

That looks amazing! (It's really disappointing that the publisher backed out....I was looking forward to seeing printed copies)

                  Hello All,

I don't know when, but the download file got corrupted in my Dropbox folder and would not display the full 11 x 17 page. I just uploaded the file again and all looks OK. I apologize for the problem...
