Now that everybody has settled down and pretty much decided how they plan to build this model, it's time to stir things up.
Unless you've decided to build Cobia, deck work will be necessary. So your work is cutout for you, there.
But that's not all. If you want a Tench class, you've got some hull work to do. But, this, is a "givin'".
And don't forget the "Floods".
So, whatever you've decided, you've got planty to do.
But here's the "jeesh!" factor.
You've thought about a Guppy, but there's just too much to change, to do one, (Reshaping the bow is not a simple job.). However, there are options.
First there's USS Charr (SS-328). She's a Balao with a fleet hull and no sonar dome. All you have to do is leave off the guns and add an EB sail.
The EB sail is a simple, straight forward design. Straight back and few, if any, compound curves. You build the Gato, as planned, with the necessary deck changes, for Charr. (Which you'll have to do, for whatever boat you chose, any how) And stick on the EB sail.
And,if you were already planning to do Tench boat, there's USS Requin (SS-481) (located in Pittsburgh, PA). A standard Tench, fleet hull, with North Atlantic sail. And the North Atlantic sail is even easier than the EB. But you will have to add a sonar dome.
So, if you've been thinking Guppys, but don't want to do the whole hull modification thing, there are options.
As for why I chose the Requin, since there are other boats similarly configured. Check out << http://www.olgoat.com/substuff/abr.htm >> . Read a few of Dex Armstrong's "After Battery Rat" stories. When you finish laughing, you'll understand why Requin rates a special place in Submarine (Irreverent) History, and deserves to be remembered.
