Type VII U-boat - photo etched decks

    Folks,

I have had a couple of people approach me recently asking about the availability of one of my photo etched decks for either the 32nd Parallel or robbe Type VII U-boat kits. Because the company that does the chemical milling for me now requires a minimum order, it has not been possible to get single deck made and I've had to essentially turn down the request for a deck.

However! Given the recent interest, if I can get a couple of deck orders in hand so as to meet the minimum, then we can get the decks made and shipped to you. The minimum number of deck orders I need is three.

So, if you are interested please drop me a line and we'll work out the details.

    -many thanks,

    Jeff

I wish! There's still way too much CAD work that needs to be done before I even get close to a PE Gato deck........

How about flood grates, could that count towards the min order? Do you still have the 637 CAD file I sent many moons ago?

          Hi Chris,

Definitely still have that CAD drawing......but that's not going to help directly since there have been no negatives made......

Jeff. When you do the GATO can you do a set in 40 th scale. And if any one has any photos of the build up/iner hull of a OTW type VII I would be insterested in getting copies. Keith

              Hi Keith,

...it's highly unlikely that I would do a 1/40th scale Gato deck. The cost of the negatives wouldn't justify the very few possible sales of decks in that scale.

For the OTW Type VII, what details might you be specifically looking for?

                Hi Jeff.
Trying to get ideas for placment of WTC, running of propshafts, control linkage, battery placment and type, just stuff a poor novice needs to learn. Did you ever get the info on the prop set up and outboard ruders for the S-boats.
I know its not sub realeted and I know you are into trains, anyway the old (104 years) TEHACHAPI depot burned down, arson is suspectd and it was two weeks from completion after reovation. Keith

                  Hi Keith,

For a photo of some of the inside of my OTW Type VII check out this posting in the U-boat Pen forum:

To be honest, except for a very small 1/4-high bulkhead in the stern, nothing was added to the interior except the usual dive module, lead, a bit of foam and the battery. That small bulkhead is the forward anchor point for the two prop shafts.

The battery is a straight 'stick' of 10 4/5AA-sized NiMH cells placed in a small 1.25 inch diameter clear tube....think mini-dive module.

                  - hope this helps,

                  Jeff

p.s. Will they be re-building the station? Be ashame if they don't.

p.p.s. My friend is still looking for that S-boat book.

Originally (back 10+ years) I did pursue laser cutting but not with metal as I hadn't found a place that could cut metal. Do you know of some place that does cut metal? That would make it *much* easier and possibly less costly to come out with different decks.

Yes I do, and he caters for the modelling trade, chiefly the locomotive boys, but he'll do anything.

Brass laser cuts really, really well- I've seen the results and it's very clean indeed. Stainless is bit less clean.

                              Folks,

                              Folks,

It looks like we now have enough interest in some photo-etched Type VII decks to reach the minimum order amount required by the vendor. Assuming that there are no (or very few) drop outs, I expect to place an order within the next week or two.

If you are interested in a main deck for either the robbe Type VII or the 32nd Parallel Type VII and you have not received an e-mail from me, please contact me directly! I can also add into this order the main deck for the 1/48th Type VII hull that is produced by Dan Kachur.

I will be asking for a 50% deposit up front, so please be prepared to move some money relatively quickly.

                              -many thanks,
