i have the simply submarines (blueish green cover??) but alot of the technology in it is very outdated unless there is a newer version out im unaware of...
Thanks for responding. I have called Traplet Publications a few weeks ago, but both books seem to be out of print at the moment. And if your telling me that the material might be outdated, then I can wait till something better comes along.
Any information out there on the basics of RC Submarines ?
ok, let me re-phrase what i said since it upset mr merriman enough he had to write me a email and belittle me...
what i wrote was just my opinion... true the book has some good calculations and info but i still feel "some" of the technology, not all of it, is outdated what with off the shelf stuff like servos, programmable radios, and all sorts of electronic devices that can go on board nowadays... Sorry if someone doesnt like my opinion but its how i feel...Yes mr merriman i am a complete newb to subs, but not to rc. Yes mr merriman i know youve been around a while and have been doing this more than the majority of the people doing this hobby and have contributed alot...I apologise if it came out that the book was worthless as its not... i just dont have a use for it and i have no problem giving it to someone that could benifit from it.
With that being said i will be glad to send SeaHorse my copy for FREE if he wishes. Just send me an address to send it to..
I love this hobby just as much as the next guy and all my helicopter flying buddys think im nuts for letting my heli sit while i tinker with my alvin... but just because im new doesnt mean i should be belittled on my inexperience in the "submarine" rc world.
sorry that you got hit with the prop of a seasoned sub person, but I really wouldn't know if the information from these books is still valid, no problem. Things change so quickly these day, who knew?
As a Sub Newbie, I'm looking for whatever someone out there wants to throw my way.
I'll email you my home address and if you like I would be more than happy to pay for the book.
I'm curious....did David also tell/warn you that a number of reputable folks have reported that "Model Submarine Technology" has a number of critical errors in it?
Yea, well David can come across quite......forcefully.
That can be both a good thing and a bad thing.

p.s. David decided that I needed to see a copy of his reply to you. That wasn't him being unpleasant....I'd say that you are seeing him in his "challenging" mode. When he is being not pleasant, you'll know it!
I think the 'Simply Submarines' book is still in print.
Model Submarine technology is definitely out of print. You may be able to pick up an old stock copy if you nose around.
It's a good book, but it's a hard read for newcomers. I started the hobby with that book, and it nearly made me run for the hills. Now I see it as a valuable resource. The electronics section is now very dated, and I know a few people who have built the circuits shown in the book, and found they didn't work. Better to leave these things to the pro's- the devices are cheaper these days anyhow.
In mechanical terms, the principles of submarine design haven't changed since this book was written. There are valuable equations for calculating CG, CB and for estimating motor/prop combinations and also for calculating the strength of a pressure hull, good methods of sealing etc.
If you can find a copy, you will find this is a book that you will return to time after time.
seahorse , i just pulled my book from the shelf to get ready for you and its the "model submarine technology" book by norbert bruggen, not the other one...
and your still welcome to it...
