I wonder why on some KILOs in various navies, they have their hydro-planes mounted on the sail, but most are mounted in the hull up near the bow, and are retractable. I suppose the ones meant for northern ice conditions have them retractable in the hull, and those meant for elsewhere have sail mounted planes(just a guess).
Anyhow, Russia is putting to sea a new improved KILO which looks like in this picture has the hydro-planes on the sail, instead of the bow.
