Re: The Future of British SSBN's Under Fire.
Interesting posts. On top of having:
- 2, 3 or 4 UK trident sub? issue, and
- Trident missiles or Tomahawks or a mixture in each sub? With MRBM and one day ICBMs belonging to Pakistan, Iran, N Korea and perhaps Saudi Arabia (versus Israel and Iran) Tomahawk cruise would have too many limitations to be a deterrent. Russia is also sticking with ICBMs. Nuclear tipped Tomahawks also cause too much deterrence ambiguity given most are conventionally tipped.
There is also the threat of the 2014 vote which may result in an independent Scotland - with a Scottish government perhaps wishing to close Britain's only SSBN base which is in Scotland. Costs for UK relocating the base would be many billions.
