    Death of Eugene Wilkinson, first commander of Nautilus

    Vice Adm. Eugene P. "Dennis" Wilkinson, who was the first commander of the Nautilus SSN571— the United States Navy’s first nuclear-powered submarine and the first machine to harness atomic fission for propulsion — died on Thursday, July 11 in Del Mar, Calif. He was 94. Wilkinson sent the famous message “Under way on nuclear power.” from the Nautilus on 17 January 1955.

      Well, yeah, the New York Times standards have slipped, along with the rest of journalism. Why pay professionals when you can get all of your news from 140 character tweets?
      (Sorry, I've been reading Jaron Lanier, and have a dim view of the Internet as a journalistic source as a result)
