What are these features on the sail of the USS New Mexico?

The lightning bolt points to her stbd running light. On the aft end of the sail is the auxiliary diesel exhaust vent. The ones at the bottom are sail access panels I believe.

In the event of a reactor shut down the diesel can power the epm and other vital equipment.

Pardon my ignorance here, but if the boat is underwater, is auxiliary diesel power available?
Do these boats carry batteries anymore?

Yes they still have a battery compartment. It isnt as big as a ww2 diesel boat though. The boat will run on the battery untill the boat can either restore the reactor or get close enough to the surface to run the diesel through the snorkel.
