This looks pretty serious. One would not have expected such quality problems to come up with US subs. Guess the times are a-changing.

Yep. I also took the tour at the same regatta. As I recall, the boat had different bits and pieces disassembled for maintenance.

          Guess how they found this

Guess how they found this one. It was raining pretty hard that day and for some reason it was also raining inside the boat. For once the weather here was our friend and not the enemy. This kind of stuff scares me on a very personal level.

Makes you wonder how the crack opened up. Did it get internally
            overpressured or misshandled in drydock?

Not that I know of. It was just there one day after she came home. We were down there doing some work and my supervisor says. "its raining in the boat". Weird it didnt happen at sea to be honest.

                This is not the only

This is not the only occurrence. Another boat had a similar problem, though not as lengthy. I don't recall if it penetrated all the way through. This area is a casting that is welded into the hull plating. Had to pass wicked tough NDT as it is SubSafe stuff. This may be a case of fatigue due to work hardening or such. The casting contains the 'scope penetrations.

Watched the boys in the yard lift off USS Hartford's sail today. Pretty neat!
