NR-1 sub finds its retirement home

By Sean D. Elliot Published on 5/8/2009

Groton — Parts of the Navy's NR-1 mini nuclear submarine arrived on a flatbed trailer this morning to its new home at the U.S. Submarine Force Museum and Library in Groton.

The NR-1 was recently de-commissioned after a long career as the world's smallest nuclear submarine. The navy has shipped the sail, propellers, a rudder and some other pieces of the sub from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, to the museum for display.

The main hull will be shipped to Washington state to have the reactor removed. The staff at the museum hopes that hull can then be donated to the museum sometime after that happens in 2015.

The NR-1's service included a variety of military and civilian research missions including helping find pieces of the space shuttle Challenger after it was destroyed on launch in 1986
