EB Delivers New Hampshire to Navy Ahead of Schedule

Groton -- Electric Boat on Thursday morning delivered the fifth of the Virginia-class submarine class to the U.S. Navy, some eight months ahead of schedule during brief ceremonies at the Groton shipyard.
The New Hampshire is this nation's newest and most advanced nuclear attack submarine, and after the sub was turned over the Navy, the media and dignitaries were given a tour of the submarine's command-and-control room.
The ahead-of-schedule delivery is evidence of EB's ongoing program to reduce costs and build even greater efficiencies into its submarine-building program. The Virginia-class subs are constructed under a joint teaming arrangement with the Virginia-based Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard.
Both shipyards, according to Navy officials, are now close to their goal of building future ships for about $2 billion in fiscal 2005 dollars, which works out to about $2.5 billion in fiscal 2012 dollars.
The first ship in the class, the USS Virginia, was delivered to the Navy after about 14.5 million man-hours of work. The New Hampshire, however, was delivered after about 11 million man-hours of work
