New Russian sub gets ready for operation

    2008-04-04

The “Yuri Dolgorukii”, the first Russian fourth generation nuclear submarine, will head off to sea in October-November this
year, head commander of the Russian Navy, Mr. Vladimir Vysotskii, said today.
In a meeting with journalists, Mr. Vysotskii confirmed that 94 percent of the vessel today is completed and that it will head off at sea in October-November this year.

In the same meeting, he also said that the development of the vessel’s missile system, the “Bulava-M” system, will be completed in the course of 2008. The Bulava system has the last year been undergoing a number of test operations, several of them unsuccessful.

The "Yuri Dolgorukii" has been under construction at Sevmash since November 1996. The sub will be the first of the project 955 Borey class, the fourth generation of Russian nuclear-powered subs. The high-tech vessels will be smaller than the "Taifun"-class subs, - 170 meters of length and up to 17,000 tons of deadweight.

According to experts, the new fourth class submarines will be the most silent-going subs in the world. They will also have a special rescue chamber, which can room all 130 crew members.

Here's the Cuban news version of this.

Russia: New Strategic Sub in 2008

    PRENSA LATINA, CUBA

    Latin American News Agency
    http://www.plenglish.com/article.asp?ID ... 7A6B787%7D)&language=EN

Moscow, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) Russian Army Head Vladimir Visotski assured in Moscow that the Borey class strategic submarine (SSBN), capable of launching long-range nuclear armed missiles is scheduled to enter service before the end of 2008.

Ninety-four percent of the new sub is already built and will enter service by the end of November, Russian Army Head specified.

The missile weighs less than 50 tons, making it lighter than the "Topol-M." It was also confirmed that "Bulava" will carry 10 nuclear warheads.

For the first time in the history of Soviet/Russian submarine-building, "Bulava" will be launched at an angle to the submarine's course instead of vertically. Russia will reinforce its Fleet of the Pacific with one of these talents of new generation, add military sources

Russia may obtain a significant fleet of SSBNs comparable to the naval leg of the US triad. In the coming years, it will be important to observe whether the Russian Navy will also be able to restore the intensity of its SSBN patrols, which have declined to one or two per year and hindered the survivability of its SSBN fleet.

The first fleet SSBN nuclear power station will start up in 2010, Ivanov added, quoted by RIA Novosti.

Recently, the spokesman of Navy Army CaptainIgor Digalo indicated that Russian submarines fleet holds second place in importance the world due to its potential after US.

In spite of the quantitative reductions, the construction of new SSBN does not stop in the shipyards of Severodvinsk and in Saint Petersburg, the official concluded.
