MOSCOW -- Russia has launched its first new-generation nuclear sub since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Yuri Dolgoruky was launched at the secretive Sevmash Shipyard in the Arctic town of Severodvinsk on Tuesday night.

Named after a Slavic prince who helped to defend Moscow, the Borei-class sub can carry 107 sailors for 100 days without surfacing and will have up to 16 Bulava M ballistic missiles.

The sub took more than 12 years to build.
