g'day all,

i was looking through a naval magazine the other day and I spotted a photo of a RN Swiftshire class boat with an odd blue black colour scheme. the caption said for littoral operations.

On the side of the sail , which is what the photo mainly was showed an unusual long rectangular stainless steel looking fixture running up the side of the sail almost to the top. forward almost at the front end.

anybody know what this is?.....

That would be ~HMS Torbay, a Trafalgar Class SSN.
Best guess is some new sort of sensor suite??More

yup part of their new

yup part of their new sonar system. They just went through a huge refit where they got their new paint job and a new "high tech" sonar detection system that the guys say actually lowered the over all speed of the sub by 3-5 knotts. They also said it weighed so #### much they had to rebalast the ship. recently the Sub was in Kingsbay Georgia for Degaussing Ops.

Yeah that last photo shows

Yeah that last photo shows the modification in question. A large rectangular section running up the port side of the sail. From the photo i saw , (In a magazine) it was shiny, like it was made of strips of Stainless steel or something similiar. This pic looks a bit different.

surely having a large rectangular section on one side of the sail would increase the underwater drag on the sail. Does Torbay pull to the port ,submerged?

that i could tell you, but i can say that when i saw it, it had that on both sides of the sail. They have a weird asss sail.

Looks like the Torbay is being used as a test boat for the new sonar outfit for the new Astute class SSN's the RN will get ( well if BAE at Barrow ever get their act together and finishes them that is !!! they even had to subcontract some of the design work to GE due to the "new" 3D design software they got being about as usefull as a chocolate fireguard !!! ).

Any other pics would be good as i'm trying to research the Astute class to build an R/C sub model and something like this will end up on them thats for sure.
