What's ironic about the USS Jimmy Carter

I find it ironic that a weapon of war would be named after a pacifist and leading critic of our current president at a time of war. Go figure.

      Yes I agree.

      This is

      Yes I agree.

This is another example of politcal lobbying. EB is of course located in the great state of Connecticut, where one of their senators is the rather liberal Chris Dodd.
I believe that this is his answer to Washington National Airport, and the latest aircraft carrier being named for President Regean.

However, President Carter is a Naval Academy Graduate-and served as engineer aboard at least one nuc boat during his Naval career.

I love the American boats (having served myself), BUT, the Brits, by far have the best submarine names of all Navies.

        I was going to write

I was going to write an inflamitory reply to this thread, instead I'm going to say how much I had enjoyed this apolitical organization, til now.

Apolitical? Hardly. Sorry opinions bother you. I'll try and do better.

            Guys......

            This sub was named back

            Guys......

This sub was named back in 1997, and yes, it was very political, as are most ship namings, there are several screwed up names on some of the newer ships being commissioned over the last few years, but.....the political process is what it is.

So lets not confuse the naming of this sub, which was about 7 years ago, with the more current ships named for political posturing.

Do you think they will have a peanut symbol on the conning tower?

                I simply stated the fact

I simply stated the fact of how warships are/have been named for the last 3 decades, good or bad, it is a fact that politics are present when billion dollar war machines are planned.

This is also why I like the names of the Brit subs, (as far as I know) know political lobbying is involved.

                  Actually the next submarine class

Actually the next submarine class will be the Don Gonyea class and it will certainly be a dismal failure that pretends to be successful....

I wonder if anyone will get that....

                    Nah sorry,

                    All our subs are

                    Nah sorry,

All our subs are named after humble sailors and ones even named after a midshipman. I think it was "Rankin". "Collins" Waller and Sheehan were all ordinary blokes. What you might call typical aussie Battlers!
