FWNY, When's the Last Time a Submarine was in NYC harbor? Why no Submarines??

I know the USS Nautilus(SSN-571) has been in NYC harbor. Maybe it is due to security concerns, or maybe they would have problems turning around to go back out. I don't
know But i sure would love to see a submarine show up(on the surface) at NYC Fleet Week.
I look for it every year, to see if a submarine is on the list.

USCGC TAMAROA (WAT/WMEC 166) sank in dry dock in New York in 1963. Because of this incident TAMAROA was referred to as the USCG's one & only submarine.

Thank you Oldus Fartus, I thought of that. My theory is the USS Nautilus(SSN-571) had a hull shape that helps it to maneuver on the surface. While a teardrop hull probably not so much without the aid of tugboats. Maybe the water isn't deep enough to allow a dive in case of an emergency to get out of sight. Seems like they could run the USS Growler(SSG-577) around the block few times and then put it back. Just kidding, my bad.

Gents,

The correct answer is that there aren't enough boats to cover operational needs, let alone PR showings. There was an article some time back that stated that area operational commanders requested enough submarine services in those areas that would require something like 22 additional boats, now! Hard to cover real missions as it is. Even when we finish building all 30 VA class and start in on the Columbias, there won't be enough boats. There never are. Besides, doing boat tours like Fleet Week does would overwhelm the crews. Tired and cranky submariners are not good PR reps.
