Reading through the below article reminded me of the above article. It might be that the USA does not have a whole lot of choice as to whether or not build diesel /electric submarines(SSK's), due to the lack of manpower, skills and knowledge needed to build the NEW nuclear submarines. I found it interesting that a person usually has to have 7 years of training and knowledge to reach the skill level needed to do some of the welding on our nuke boats. I wonder if the same level of training and experience and skills needed to build the diesel/electrics submarines. ????? I don't know. I wish they'd bring back trade schools at the high school level.
U.S. President Donald Trump says he wants to build dozens of new warships in one of the biggest peace-time expansions of the U.S. Navy. The initiative could cost nearly $700 billion in government funding, take 30 years to complete and require hiring tens of thousands of skilled shipyard workers - many of whom don't exist yet because they still need to be hired and trained, according to the interviews and the documents reviewed. Trump has vowed a huge build-up of the U.S. military to project American power in the face of an emboldened China and Russia.

I find AIP boats interesting.
I also think that there are several manufacturers around the world that build very capable boat.
My thinking is a very good boat could be bought and our technology installed making it an outstanding submarine.
The Gotland submarine has already proven it can take on our carrier fleet in war games and get very close to our carrier, take photos and get out without being detected.
I think this would be an option instead of trying to build from scratch an new USA diesel submarine.
