GREENVILLE — A former Clemson University official suing the school over losing his job says the college's participation in the restoration of a Confederate submarine is a wasteful project.

The Greenville News reported Thursday that Eugene Troutman wrote a 14-page letter to three Clemson trustees about the school's Restoration Institute near Charleston.

Troutman asked trustees to stop funding the institute, whose work includes restoring the H.S. Hunley raised from the Atlantic Ocean in 2000.

Troutman claims in his lawsuit that he lost his job as executive secretary to Clemson's board after he spoke out about salary increases given to some university administrators.

Clemson spokeswoman Cathy Sams dismissed Troutman's letter as another in a series of false allegations.
