Sub base sailor pleads guilty in bank robbery

July 29, 2008
NEW LONDON, Conn. - A former Navy petty officer is facing prison for helping out in a Waterford bank robbery while he was stationed at the Naval Submarine base in New London.
Prosecutors say 25-year-old Jeffrey Cleckley was paid $4,000 for his part in a Sept. 14 armed robbery of the Waterford branch of the Bank of America.
Police say Cleckley loaned the getaway car to 25-year-old Victor Sowell, a fellow Navy machinist, and was along for the ride when Jeremy Doe of South Carolina robbed the bank.
A New London prosecutor has recommended a two-year prison term, though Cleckley has a right to argue for less at his Sept. 5 sentencing.
Doe, captured after another bank robbery in Raleigh, N.C., remains in custody in North Carolina.
