Navy names new attack submarine 'USS Minnesota'

Interesting that the CSS Virginia just about finished off the original USS Minnesota in the battle of Hampton Roads - now a Virgina class boat is going to bear that same name.

The reason this sub will never visit Duluth
is because it is being built for a very special purpose, deterreant and defense. Visiting Duluth would be a mis-use of primary mission. … read more Besides, I don't think the battleships Iowa or Missouri ever visited the states they were named after.

The navy announced today that two of its upcoming attack submarines will be named the USS Minnesota and the USS North Dakota.

Designated SSN 783, the USS Minnesota becomes the third ship to bear the state's name.

The Virginia-class submarines will be 377 feet in length, hold a beam of 34 feet and weigh 7,800-tons. They will operate at more than 25 knots -- roughly 29 miles per hour -- submerged and are designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship.

According to the Navy, the ships provide improved stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and other "special warfare enhancements."

The Navy said the ships will be able to attack targets ashore with Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, coastal waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; special forces delivery and support; and mine delivery and minefield mapping.

The first USS Minnesota, a sailing steam frigate, was commissioned in 1857 and served during the Civil War, remaining in service until her decommissioning in 1898. The second USS Minnesota was commissioned in 1907 and was among the Great White Fleet sent by President Theodore Roosevelt on a voyage around the world. It was decommissioned in 1921, after participating in World War I.

The USS North Dakota becomes the second ship to bear the state's name. The first ship was in service from 1910 through 1923.
