Celebrate Nautilus' Golden Year 50 Years under the ice
The Historic Ship Nautilus and the Submarine Force Library & Museum will host a number of special evens celebrating the Golden Year which highlights the 50th anniversary of the first crossing of the North Pole by a ship - the world's first nuclear-powered ship, USS Nautilus (SSN 571), which completed the historic transit August 3, 1958. All events are free and at the Museum, 1Crystal Lake Road, Groton, Conn., 06340:
- July 12, 2008: Lecture and Booksigning: Alfred McLaren: "Unknown Waters." Relive an under-ice adventure by joining the former commanding officer of USS Queenfish (SSN 651), retired Navy Capt. Alfred S. McLaren, as he takes you on the Arctic-Siberian Shelf Expedition of 1970. Event is at noon. Books will be available for purchase.
- August 2, 2008: Lecture and Booksigning: Don Keith: "The Ice Diaries." Former Nautilus Commanding Officer and retired Navy Capt. William R. Anderson worked with noted author Don Keith in this updated edition of the Anderson-Blair Book "NAUTILUS 90 NORTH," the original story of the epic voyage of USS Nautilus (SSN 571), the first vessel to transit the Arctic via the North Pole in 1958. This new addition relates more of the impact of the North Pole voyage against the backdrop of the Cold War. Event is at noon.
- August 3, 2008: 50th Anniversary of the North Pole Voyage Ceremony. This commemorative event hightlights the revolutionary achievements of USS Nautilus and their transformational impact on U.S. Navy operations in Arctic Waters. The event is at 2 p.m.
