An unmanned submarine developed partly by BAE workers in Lancashire is to make its debut at a conference in the Middle East.
The Talisman Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV), developed by BAE Systems, will be put to the test in Qatar at the Doha International Maritime and Defence Exhibition on Tuesday.
Bosses from BAE Systems, which has bases in Warton and Samlesbury, near Preston, will also present a paper on the future of unmanned vehicles at the event.
The Lancashire Evening Post revealed in 2006 that Preston workers were involved with the development of Talisman.

BAE Systems will present a paper on the “future of unmanned vehicles in the maritime environment†at the Doha International Maritime and Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX 2008) today.
The Talisman Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) system developed by BAE Systems also made its debut in Qatar at the show, when it was inaugurated yesterday.
Talisman is a family of maritime UUVs using common technology from air and land systems. Its design concept is that it is an underwater “truck†capable of carrying a range of application-specific mission payloads. Payload capacity is currently 500kg. Talisman has already been demonstrated and integrated into the Nautis Combat Management System fitted to the UK Hunt and Sandown class Mine Countermeasures Vessels (MCMVs).
Andy Tonge, Autonomous Systems manager, BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte), will present the paper on the future of UUVs in the naval domain at 2.30pm.
“He will assert that advances in technology are rapidly enabling the possibilities for unmanned or autonomous platforms to provide a remote, over the horizon military capability that keeps the human operator out of the danger zone,†a spokesperson said.
