Goats will no longer be used to test the effects of the bends on submariners, the Ministry of Defence announced yesterday.
The live animals were used to find out the effects of decompression sickness in an escape from a stricken submarine.
The results were then used to weigh up the risks of staying in the sub or trying to reach the surface.
But Minister Derek Twigg said: "The review concluded that the remaining areas of uncertainty in escape and rescue relate to events that are considered highly unlikely, and do not need to be addressed by animal testing."
