TRAGEDY AT SEA: INS Sindhughosh suffered slight damage to the conning tower area.

New Delhi: An Indian Navy submarine on Thursday collided with a foreign merchant vessel while surfacing in the seas north of Mumbai on Monday.

Naval sources confirmed to CNN-IBN the submarine - INS Sindhughosh - suffered slight damage to the conning tower area.

The sub was apparently moving at periscope depth when the accident occurred. There's speculation that the indigenously developed hydro-acoustal sonar, USHUS, malfunctioned, causing the accident.

The Sindhughosh was taking part in Fleet Level war games and is a Russian built Kilo class vessel that underwent a refit in Russia two years ago.

It is among the most advanced in the navy's submarine fleet and is fitted with Klub cruise missiles that are fired through the torpedo tubes.

Some years ago, another submarine had rammed into a merchant vessel off Goa.
